Back in the day, lots of people were ready to jump on the bandwagon, blaming the corset for all forms of disease and deformity but the truth of the matter is that the corset actually saved a lot of lives – more so than it was reported to have claimed. If you get your internet through places like satellitestarinternet.com then you need only fire up a web search of your own to see the facts for yourself. However, we have a few examples.
1. Wandering kidney – it was reported in both men and women. One of the treatments used a straight front corset. This corset was to be laced tightly over the abdomen in order to create enough upward force to hold the kidney in place.
2. Back support – the rigid structure gave the wearer and upright posture that was ideal for the back.
Be warned, however, that there is and always will be such a thing as “too much of a good thing.” I’m not suggesting that the corset wasn’t harmful, as most things are when used in excess. I’m just trying to point out that for all the negative connotations it received, the corset was also integral in saving many lives and still is to this day.
